Federal Prosecution of Child Sex
Exploitation Offenders, 2006 Presents Federal criminal case processing statistics on child
sex offenses, including sex transportation, sexual abuse, and child pornography. The report
includes data on case processing, such as the number of cases referred, prosecuted, and
convicted. Defendant characteristics at initial hearing for the three types of offenses are
provided. Data are also presented on changes in the number of defendants charged from 1994 to
2006.
Federal Prosecution of Human Trafficking, 2001-2005
Presents Federal criminal case processing statistics on peonage and
slavery statutes in the U.S. criminal code with a focus on human
trafficking offenses created by Congress in the Trafficking in Victims
Protection Act of 2000. The report includes national data on the number
and type of human trafficking offenders referred to and prosecuted by
U.S. attorneys. It describes human trafficking case processing,
including number of convictions and types of sentences imposed. Data are
presented on matters referred by investigating law enforcement agency
and Federal judicial district.
Intellectual Property Theft, 2002
Presents statistics on both criminal and civil enforcement of Federal intellectual property laws for 1994-2002. Criminal intellectual property theft offenses include copyright and trademark infringement and theft of trade secrets. Civil intellectual property suits include copyright, trademark, and patent infringement. The report summarizes intellectual property legislation and nine-year trends. This Special Report presents intellectual property trends in the number of suspects (both individuals and organizations) referred to U.S. attorneys and defendants prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced. A numerical table sums up the types of sentences and penalties imposed across the period. The report also includes the number of civil intellectual property complaints filed and terminated, with information on plaintiff winners and monetary award amounts.
Money Laundering Offenders, 1994-2001
Describes the criminal case processing of money laundering defendants in the Federal criminal justice system. It examines both Bank Secrecy Act offenses (statutes prohibiting monetary record and reporting violations) and Money Laundering Control Act offenses (statutes prohibiting the underlying criminal activity which generates the illicit profits involved in laundering). This report also describes the number and disposition of money laundering suspects investigated by U.S. attorneys, the number of money laundering defendants in cases filed in U.S. district courts, and adjudication outcomes including sanctions imposed. Included in the report are criminal case processing trends (1994-2001) of Federal money laundering offenders.
Immigration Offenders in the Federal Criminal Justice System, 2000
Describes the number of immigration offenders prosecuted in the Federal court between 1985 and
2000. The report examines the impact of the enactment of the Illegal Immigration Reform and
Responsibility Act of 1986 on prosecutions. This act authorized increases in INS law
enforcement activities and personnel and required longer sentences for immigration offenders
with serious criminal histories. The report includes the number of persons evaluated for
prosecution by the U.S. Attorneys, the nationality of persons investigated, characteristics
and criminal histories of defendants, trends in prosecutions of immigration offenders,
defendants adjudicated, and immigration offenders under correctional supervision. The data in
the report are from the BJS Federal Justice Statistics Program.
Federal Drug Offenders, 1999, with Trends, 1984-99 Describes offenders investigated
for and charged with Federal drug offenses during 1999. This report includes statistics
describing type of drug involved in the offense, criminal history of defendants charged,
demographic characteristics of defendants charged, defendants' role in the drug conspiracy,
and sentences imposed. Also included are statistics describing the change in the number of
suspects investigated, prosecuted, proportion sentenced to prison, and time to be served for
the period 1984 through 1999. This report is based on data from BJS's Federal Justice
Statistics Program.
Federal Criminal Appeals, 1999, with Trends, 1985-99 Describes the increase in the
appellate caseload as a result of challenges to the sentence imposed. Following implementation
of the Federal Sentencing Reform Act, which opened the sentencing process to appellate review,
the number of criminal appeals filed doubled. Most appeals are filed by the defendant. Also
describes characteristics of district court cases that resulted in appellate action such as
the proportion of defendants who originally pleaded guilty; the type of counsel representing
the defendant; the sentence imposed; and the sentence in effect following successful appeals.
Defense Counsel in Criminal Cases, November 2000 This Special Report examines issues
of legal representation for defendants in Federal district court and large local
jurisdictions, and inmates in local jails and Federal and State prison. It also briefly
describes types of publicly financed programs available to both Federal and local defendants.
Offenders Returning to Federal Prison, 1986-97, 9/00
Describes offenders returning to Federal prison within 3 years of release and their time served upon return. Comparisons are made of offenders returning for technical violations of supervision conditions and offenders returning for new crimes.
