Federal Justice Statistics

The Federal Justice Statistics presents federal criminal case statistics on suspects and defendants processed in the federal criminal justice system. The report provides data on the number of persons arrested, investigated, convicted, and sentenced for a violation of federal law. It includes the number of offenders under federal correctional supervision at the pre-trial and post-conviction stages. It also describes case outcomes, including percent prosecuted, convicted, and sentenced by type of sanction. Data were collected from federal law enforcement, courts, and corrections agencies as a part of the Bureau of Justice Statistics Federal Justice Statistics Program.

Federal Criminal Justice Trends

The Federal Criminal Justice Trends presents data on Federal criminal justice trends from 1994-2003. This report summarizes the activities of agencies at each stage of the Federal criminal case process. It includes 10-year trend statistics on the number arrested (with detail on drug offenses); number and disposition of suspects investigated by U.S. attorneys; number of persons detained prior to trial; number of defendants in cases filed, convicted, and sentenced; and number of offenders under Federal correctional supervision (incarceration, supervised release, probation, and parole). This report updates Federal Criminal Case Processing. To view a list of all in the series go to the Related Publications page.

Compendium of Federal Justice Statistics

The Compendium of Federal Justice Statistics is an annual report that presents an overview of case processing in the Federal criminal justice system. The statistics reported in the Compendium of Federal Justice Statistics will not match statistics reported by Federal criminal justice agencies in their respective published annual reports, for reasons which are cited in the BJS document entitled Comparing Case Processing Statistics. The statistics contained in the Compendia reports are compiled from the Federal Justice Statistics Program (FJSP) database, which includes data from various Federal criminal justice agencies and which has been reconciled according to standards that were agreed upon by an interagency working group composed of these Federal criminal justice agencies (the Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the United States Sentencing Commission, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons).
